Seminar SMASH: Handwriting as a Window into the Brain
ob 12:00

Vabljeni na seminar v okviru projekta SMASH, na katerem bo prof. Jiri Mekyska s Tehnične univerze v Brnu predaval na temo digitalnih biomarkerjev in analiziranja rokopisa s pomočjo digitalnih naprav in umetne inteligence. Seminar bo v četrtek, 263. 2026, ob 12.00 v predavalnici 3 na FRI. Vabljeni vsi zainteresirani!

Naslov: Handwriting as a Window into the Brain: Digital Biomarkers for Neurodegenerative and Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Povzetek predavanja:

Handwriting is a complex sensorimotor activity integrating motor control, cognition, and visuospatial processing, and its impairments may reflect both neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. This talk will present advances in the computerised analysis of online handwriting, where digitising devices capture the full dynamics of writing, including pen trajectory, timing, pressure, and pen angles. These signals enable quantitative characterization of handwriting through temporal, spatial, kinematic, and dynamic features, complemented by advanced signal-processing approaches such as entropy measures, wavelet analysis, and fractional-order derivatives. Such features provide interpretable digital biomarkers that support objective diagnosis, assessment, and monitoring of conditions including Parkinson’s disease dysgraphia and developmental dysgraphia in children. The talk will demonstrate how AI and quantitative modelling can reveal subtle motor and cognitive manifestations that are difficult to detect by traditional subjective assessments, and will introduce the Graphomotor and Handwriting Disabilities Rating Scale (GHDRS), a framework for detailed and objective evaluation of handwriting difficulties.

O predavatelju:

Prof. Jiří Mekyska is the head of the BDALab (Brain Diseases Analysis Laboratory, https://bdalab.utko.fekt.vut.cz/) at the Brno University of Technology, where he leads a multidisciplinary team of researchers (signal processing engineers, data scientists, neurologists, psychologists) with a special focus on the development of new digital endpoints and digital biomarkers enabling to better understand, diagnose and monitor neurodegenerative (e.g. Parkinson’s disease) and neurodevelopmental (e.g. dysgraphia) diseases. Moreover, prof. Jiří Mekyska is Chief Scientific Officer and Co-Founder of the Scicake start-up (https://www.scicake.com/).
